Artificial intelligence companies need more than a promising idea. They need specialised talent, access to computing, customers willing to deploy new systems and the ability to turn research into dependable products. Karim Beguir, co-founder of Tunisia-founded InstaDeep, offers a prominent example of African-rooted entrepreneurship in this technically demanding field.

InstaDeep developed AI products and services for business and scientific applications. The company’s trajectory attracted international attention and culminated in its acquisition by BioNTech, announced in 2023. The deal demonstrated that a company founded in Africa can build technology relevant to global markets, while also underscoring how capital, talent and international partnerships influence the growth of deep-tech firms.

For founders building AI businesses, technical performance is only one part of the challenge. Enterprise customers need systems that are reliable, secure and explainable enough for their intended use. Companies must also address data rights, bias, privacy and the costs of training and operating models. In fields such as healthcare, these questions are especially consequential.

InstaDeep’s experience highlights the value of developing specialist expertise and solving problems for customers beyond a single local market. Deep-tech ventures may need longer development cycles than consumer apps, making research partnerships, patient capital and access to skilled teams particularly important.

The acquisition also raises broader questions for Africa’s innovation ecosystem. International exits can provide returns for investors and founders, create opportunities for employees and connect local talent to global research networks. But policymakers and entrepreneurs also have reason to consider how expertise, jobs and new company formation can continue to grow in the regions where ventures began.

Beguir’s story is therefore not simply a narrative about AI hype or an acquisition price. It is a case study in building specialised capability, winning demanding customers and connecting African-founded innovation to international markets.
