Africa’s Power Developers Need Bankable Projects, Not Only Ambitious Targets
Expanding electricity access requires projects that can attract durable financing, secure reliable offtake, manage currency exposure and deliver power at costs customers can afford.
Africa’s Power Developers Need Bankable Projects, Not Only Ambitious Targets
Electricity expansion plans often set out large ambitions for new generation and wider access. Turning those goals into operating assets requires a more detailed set of conditions: credible project preparation, predictable rules, reliable payment arrangements and a realistic assessment of what customers can afford.
Revenue Certainty Matters
Power projects typically require substantial upfront investment and generate revenue over time. Lenders and investors therefore examine who will buy the electricity, how payments will be collected and what happens if demand or payment performance differs from expectations. Contracts must allocate risks clearly and be supported by credible counterparties.
Currency and Financing Risks Need Attention
Where project costs or debt are denominated in foreign currency but revenue is collected locally, exchange-rate movements can complicate repayment. Developers and public authorities should assess currency exposure early and avoid relying on assumptions that cannot be sustained. Financing structures should be matched to project cash flows where possible.
Transmission and Distribution Are Part of the Project
New generation does not automatically translate into dependable electricity for households and businesses. Grid capacity, transmission connections, distribution performance and maintenance all influence the value of a power asset. Planning these components together can reduce delays and improve the likelihood that generated electricity reaches customers.
Affordability and Reliability Must Be Balanced
Tariffs need to support sustainable operations while recognising household and business capacity to pay. Poor service can weaken willingness to pay, while financially stressed utilities may struggle to maintain infrastructure. Transparent rules, targeted support for vulnerable users and better service performance can contribute to a more durable system.
Prepare Projects Before Seeking Capital
Early work on permits, land, environmental and social safeguards, grid connection, procurement and revenue arrangements can make a project more credible to investors. A well-developed project pipeline gives financiers more than a target: it provides a clearer view of implementation, risk and expected performance.
Questions for Project Sponsors
- Is there a credible buyer and payment structure for the electricity?
- Have currency, construction and demand risks been assessed?
- Are grid connections and supporting infrastructure planned?
- Are permits and environmental and social safeguards progressing?
- Can the proposed service and tariff structure remain affordable and financially sustainable?
Conclusion
Energy ambitions become more achievable when they are translated into projects with credible economics and strong implementation plans. Bankability is not a substitute for public policy goals; it is one of the practical requirements for mobilising the capital and expertise needed to meet them.
